VIEWPORTS EXPLAINED

In operation, a transparent, low-vapor-pressure film is interposed on the vacuum side of the view glass lens. As the film becomes coated from process vapor, it is advanced by rotating the film knob to expose a fresh, clear area for continued viewing. A shutter can be positioned to limit or prevent exposure of the film during periods when viewing is not required.

By turning the outer ring of the viewing lens, the built-in polarizing filters can be adjusted to control the light transmission from objects that are too bright for normal viewing. The viewing aperture allows for a 90-degree field of view. The aperture is located off-center of the vacuum port axis, which affords additional viewing latitude, depending on the mounting position.

For general use, because of its exceedingly low water vapor adsorption, Teflon film is recommended. Because its water vapor adsorption results in longer pump down times, Kapton film is recommended only for high-temperature applications.
